Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy

Open Mind Therapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Many people are cautious as to how much control they will give up by being 'hypnotised'.  Will they know what they are saying?  Will they reveal something about themselves they want kept secret?  Will they lose control?

You never lose control during hypnotherapy.  With your eyes closed and your mind more inwardly focussed, you simply have the opportunity, with skilled guidance, to use your imagination to process what you need to process.  There is no magic, no loss of control, no hocus pocus and invariably no memory loss.  You are conscious throughout.

Without the overwhelming input from our eyes and, without the need to attend to being in a social setting with your therapist, you will see tendencies and patterns that have always been with you, but are usually just beyond the reach of the conscious mind.  This is where the power of hypnosis lies.  You get to see what you need to see for your health and welfare.  These experiences can be profoundly life changing.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a broad category of therapies ranging from analytical (dealing with reasons why) to cognitive (dealing with thought patterns) interventions.  I also incorporate EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) for the rapid resolution of trauma or 'stuck' thinking.  Using a blend of models of Psychotherapy, Counselling, EMDR, Open Mind treats the root causes of whatever your presenting problem might be.  With this large toolkit, we can accommodate your changing needs as you pass through the therapeutic process.

Any therapy is only as good as the person who practices and the personal experience and understanding of your therapist will inform any intellectual ability they might use to help you resolve your problems and issues.

Our philosophy recognises that much dis-ease is caused by being existentially isolated and alone.  To heal we need to connect up with our hearts and minds, extend this to our communities, and develop a sense of belonging.  This is in fact developing our spirituality.  A good therapist will facilitate you finding a greater context for your life, encouraging you to find answers and solutions that suit your own belief system, that work within it, and that help develop your own unique purpose and place in your community.

The Mind/Body Link

Latest scientific research in the field of Psychoneuroimmunology is looking at the way in which emotions affect the immune system and how, with a compromised immune system, the body chooses to respond.  For many of us in alternative methods of healing, this new avenue of scientific enquiry is a breath of fresh air.  The day is dawning when conventional medicine will embrace the human being in their entirety and not as a dislocated collection of symptoms affecting various individuals randomly.

When I say, "the body chooses to respond" the question I ask myself is "why does a person who feels under attack from their environment develop a condition like ME?" or "Why does a person with multiple forms of physical disease suddenly spontaneously heal after understanding their emotional trauma?"  It is my belief that the body chooses to respond to emotional events in ways that equate with the impact of the event.  Lower back problems reveal a feeling of lack of support, throat problems reveal an emotional 'lump in the throat' and so on.

It has been demonstrated to me over and again, that where conventional medicine stops on the physical plane, our approach at Open Mind takes healing further to levels of emotional and spiritual health that link directly with physical symptoms.  Given that we are an organic whole, what sense is there in complicating things by separating the body from the mind?

GPs in our locality are already turning to us with patients who they are no longer able to help.  Many are healing and with impressive results.  This collaboration between the medical establishment and Open Mind is the beginning of a new union between the scientific and the emotional and spiritual being.  We would be happy to invite you to join in with this movement.
